The temptation is to just crank ISO until the image is bright, but that path leads to grain, color smearing, and crushed shadows. The professional approach is a deliberate sequence: gather all the light you can with fast glass and a wide aperture first, protect your motion with a 180-degree shutter, then raise ISO only as far as needed, ideally sitting at your camera's higher dual-native ISO. Expose carefully using your scopes (often slightly to the right to protect shadows), add even a little light where you can, and reserve noise reduction for a clean, correctly-placed step in post. Going from f/4 to f/1.4 is roughly three stops of light, which can be the difference between a clean ISO 1600 and a noisy ISO 12800 for the same exposure. Open your fastest lens to its widest usable aperture (often f/1.4 to f/2.8) and let it carry the load.
There is a tradeoff: wide apertures give very shallow depth of field, so focus becomes critical, especially on moving subjects. Don't always shoot wide open if it costs you focus, many lenses are also a touch sharper a stop down. But as a low-light strategy, fast primes (a 35mm or 50mm f/1.4) are the single best investment for keeping ISO down and footage clean. They beat any amount of post noise reduction, because the cleanest noise is the noise you never recorded.

Be careful not to overdo it: blown highlights are unrecoverable, so push to the right only until your highlights are safely below clipping, watching your zebras or false color. The goal is a brighter capture that you correct down in post, not a blown one. If you're shooting a standard profile rather than log, expose accurately rather than aggressively to the right. Either way, get exposure right in-camera, because lifting an underexposed dark scene in post is the single fastest way to turn quiet noise into ugly, dominant grain.
The cleanest low-light footage usually has at least some added light. You don't need to flood a scene; a small amount of motivated light raises your subject above the noise floor and lets you keep ISO sensible. A single soft LED panel as a key, a small on-camera light, or even a practical lamp brought into frame can transform a noisy, marginal exposure into a clean, intentional one. The point is to lift the part of the image that matters (usually a face) so you're not relying on ISO to do all the work.
Think motivated: bounce a light off a wall or ceiling for soft fill, place a practical that justifies itself in the frame, or use negative fill to shape the existing light into contrast rather than fighting darkness everywhere. Even a modest, well-placed source means you can drop ISO a stop or two, and every stop you save is meaningfully cleaner footage. When you truly can't add light, that's when fast glass, native ISO, and exposing to the right do the heavy lifting.
Some noise is inevitable in low light, so handle it deliberately in post rather than accepting muddy footage or over-smoothing it.
