DaVinci Resolve has the best color tools of any editor, and most of that power lives on a single page. The problem for newcomers is that the Color page throws everything at you at once: scopes, wheels, curves, a node graph, and dozens of qualifiers. This guide cuts through the clutter. You will learn the difference between technical balance and creative grade, how to read the four scopes that matter, how to build a clean node tree instead of a tangled mess, and how to push a look across an entire timeline without re-grading every clip by hand. By the end you will have a repeatable grading workflow you can trust.
Before grading, open Project Settings and configure Color Management to match your footage. If you shot log or raw, set the correct Input Color Space so Resolve interprets your material accurately. Open the scopes panel and choose at least the waveform and RGB parade. Work in consistent room lighting and, if possible, on a calibrated display. Getting these foundations right means every decision you make afterward is based on an accurate image.
On your first Corrector node, open the Color Wheels. Use Lift to set your shadows near the bottom of the waveform without crushing them flat, and Gain to set highlights near the top without clipping. Adjust Gamma to place the midtones at a natural brightness. The goal is a clean tonal range that uses the available latitude without losing detail at either end. Check the waveform after each move rather than trusting your eye.
Still on node one, watch the RGB parade. On a neutral part of the image, align the bottoms of the red, green, and blue traces, then align the tops. If red sits high in the shadows your blacks are warm, so cool them; if blue sits high in the highlights, warm them. Use the vectorscope's skin-tone line to confirm faces read naturally. When all three channels track together on neutrals, your shot is balanced and ready for creative work.
Add a second serial node downstream of your balance node and label it. This is where your look lives. Build contrast, shift the palette, warm the highlights or cool the shadows, and shape saturation to serve the mood. Keeping the look separate from the balance means you can revisit either independently later. Make your moves deliberately and keep checking the vectorscope so saturation stays believable rather than tipping into oversaturated skin and skies.
Add another node for targeted work. Use a power window to shape a vignette, brighten a face, or hold down a bright sky, and enable tracking if the subject moves so the window follows it. Use the qualifier to pull a specific color or tonal range, such as warming skin without touching the background. Keep each isolation on its own clearly named node so the grade stays readable and easy to adjust.
Grab a still from your finished hero shot into the Gallery. Move to the next clip and either paste the grade across or use the still as a reference with the wipe to compare side by side. Nudge the new shot's primaries until it matches the reference on the scopes and to the eye. For clips from the same setup, copying the grade gets you most of the way; spend your time on the shots that genuinely differ.
For a sequence that should share one unified look, assign the clips to a group. Apply your creative grade at the group level so a single adjustment ripples across every clip in the group, while still allowing per-clip balance corrections at the clip level. This separates the shared look from individual matching, dramatically reducing the work needed to keep a whole scene consistent and making late revisions far faster.
Before delivery, scan the whole timeline watching the top and bottom of the waveform to confirm nothing is clipping past legal limits. Confirm your output color space matches your delivery target in the project settings. Export a test and review it on the devices your audience will use, since color behaves differently outside the grading environment. Make any final adjustments back on the Color page and re-export with confidence that the grade will hold up.
Color work splits into two distinct jobs, and conflating them is the single most common beginner mistake. Correction is technical: you neutralize color casts, set your black and white points, and get every shot to a consistent, balanced starting point. Grade is creative: you build a mood, a palette, a film emulation, or a brand look on top of that balanced foundation. Correction is judged on scopes; grade is judged with your eyes.
If you start pushing a teal-and-orange look before your shots are balanced, you are building on sand. Two clips that look similar to the eye can sit very differently on the scopes, and any creative move you apply will land inconsistently across them. Balance first, always, then grade. This is also why a node-based workflow matters: it lets you keep correction and grade on separate, independently editable nodes rather than stacking everything into one muddy adjustment.
A practical rule of thumb: spend the first pass making every shot look neutral and natural, with shadows that are not crushed, highlights that are not clipped, and skin tones that read correctly. Only once the whole timeline is consistent should you commit to a look. Grading an inconsistent timeline wastes hours because you end up fighting the same problems shot by shot.
Your eyes adapt and lie to you, especially after an hour of staring at a single shot. Scopes do not. Resolve gives you four primary scopes, and you should learn to read at least three of them. Open the scopes panel from the toolbar at the top right of the Color page. The waveform shows luminance distribution from bottom (black, around 0) to top (white, around 1023 on a 10-bit scale or 100 on IRE). Use it to set exposure: shadows should sit near the bottom without being crushed flat, and highlights near the top without clipping off the ceiling.
The RGB parade splits the image into separate red, green, and blue traces side by side. This is your white-balance tool. On a neutral subject, the bottoms of all three channels should align and the tops should align. If red sits higher than blue in the shadows, your blacks are warm; pull them toward neutral. The vectorscope plots color, not brightness, and its skin-tone line (running toward the upper-left) is invaluable for judging whether faces read naturally regardless of the rest of the frame.
The histogram is the fourth scope and overlaps with the waveform conceptually, showing tonal distribution as a graph. Most colorists rely most heavily on the parade and waveform. The discipline of checking the scopes after every primary move, rather than trusting your eye, is what separates consistent grading from guesswork.
Your foundational corrections happen with the primary wheels. The standard Color Wheels give you Lift, Gamma, Gain, and Offset. Lift controls the shadows, Gamma the midtones, Gain the highlights, and Offset shifts the entire image uniformly. Drag the center of each wheel to add or remove color in that tonal range, and use the master wheel beneath each to raise or lower brightness. Most balance work is done with Lift to set your blacks, Gain to set your whites, and Gamma to place the midtones where you want them.
For log and raw footage, switch to the Log wheels instead. Log wheels split the image into Shadow, Midtone, and Highlight ranges with adjustable boundaries, giving you more surgical control over flat log material than the standard wheels provide. They are the preferred tool when grading footage shot in S-Log, Log-C, V-Log, or camera raw, because they let you lift the muddy shadows of a log image without contaminating the highlights.
The Primaries Bars view offers the same Lift/Gamma/Gain control as vertical sliders, which some colorists find more precise for isolating a single channel. Whichever interface you prefer, the goal is identical: neutralize casts, set your contrast range, and produce a clean, balanced image before you touch anything creative.
A node is a single processing step, and nodes chain together in the order signal flows through them, left to right. The art of grading in Resolve is partly the art of organizing nodes so you can revisit and adjust any one stage without unpicking the rest. Resist the urge to do everything on node one. A clean, readable tree saves you when a client asks to change one thing late in the project.
Serial nodes pass the image from one to the next in sequence and are your everyday workhorse. Add one with the keyboard shortcut, and label each node so you remember what it does. A typical structure is: node 1 for primary balance, node 2 for the creative look, node 3 for a power window or secondary qualifier, and a final node for output adjustments. Parallel and layer nodes let you blend multiple grades together, while a key input lets a qualifier or window drive where a correction applies.
Power windows isolate part of the frame with a shape, so you can darken a sky, brighten a face, or vignette an edge. The qualifier picks a color or tonal range to isolate a specific element, such as pulling skin to warm it without shifting the background. Use trackers to follow moving subjects so windows stay locked to them. Keeping each of these tasks on its own clearly named node is what makes a complex grade maintainable.
Grading one hero shot is easy. Making forty shots match it is the real job. Resolve gives you several tools to propagate a grade efficiently. The simplest is copying a grade from a graded clip to others using the middle-click paste or by dragging the grade between clips in the timeline thumbnail row. For shots from the same camera and lighting setup, this gets you most of the way instantly.
Stills are your reference system. Grab a still from a graded clip by right-clicking in the viewer, and it appears in the Gallery. You can then apply that still's grade to other clips, or use the wipe feature to compare a new shot against your reference side by side, nudging it until it matches. Groups let you assign clips to a shared group and apply a grade at the group level that affects every member, which is ideal for a scene that should carry one unified look.
For the most controlled approach, build your creative look once and reuse it. You can save a node or a full node tree as a preset, or apply a custom look using adjustment-style structures. The principle throughout is the same: do the creative thinking once, then distribute it, and reserve per-shot work for the matching adjustments each individual clip genuinely needs.
Over-saturation is the most frequent error in amateur grades. Pushing saturation to make footage feel rich quickly tips skin into sunburn and skies into cartoon blue. Use the vectorscope and pull back; a believable grade is usually more restrained than it feels while you are making it. Crushed blacks are the second offender: dragging Lift down until shadows look punchy often destroys detail that you cannot recover, so check the bottom of your waveform.
Grading on a poor or uncalibrated monitor undermines everything else. If your display runs too bright, too cool, or with crushed contrast, your grades will look wrong everywhere else. A calibrated reference monitor is ideal, but at minimum work in consistent, controlled lighting and check your export on the devices your audience actually uses. Trusting the scopes for technical decisions protects you from an imperfect display.
Finally, watch your delivery levels. A grade that looks great in the Resolve viewer can clip or band once exported if you push highlights past legal limits or grade in the wrong color space. Set your project color management correctly at the start, keep an eye on the scopes near the ceiling and floor of the range, and your finished file will hold up across platforms.
