Get the stack right and the camera does the heavy lifting; get one piece wrong and no amount of grading fully rescues it. This guide is the checklist we actually use on set, written so you can copy each value into your camera menu in order. Shoot at a higher resolution than your delivery target whenever the project allows. Capturing 4K for a 1080p deliverable gives you room to reframe, stabilize, and punch in without quality loss, and downscaling 4K to 1080p produces a sharper, cleaner 1080p than shooting 1080p natively. 4K (UHD, 3840x2160) is the practical default for most cinematic work; 6K and beyond are worth it when you need extreme crops or future-proofing.
Codec decides how much grading latitude survives the card. Aim for 10-bit color at 4:2:2 chroma subsampling rather than the 8-bit 4:2:0 most cameras default to. 10-bit gives you 1024 tonal steps per channel versus 256, which is the difference between a sky that grades smoothly and one that bands into ugly stripes. On Sony bodies that means XAVC S-I (intra-frame, every frame compressed independently) for the most robust grading, or XAVC S (long-GOP) for smaller files. Blackmagic shooters get the most latitude from BRAW; Canon Cinema EOS offers Cinema RAW Light and XF-AVC.
Frame rate sets the cadence of motion. 24fps (technically 23.976) is the global standard for narrative cinema and the single biggest contributor to a filmic feel because its slightly stuttered motion is what audiences have been trained for a century to read as movies. Use 25fps in PAL regions for broadcast, 30fps for a slightly smoother documentary or web feel, and 50/60fps or higher only when you intend to slow the footage down in post for clean slow motion.
Shutter speed should follow the 180-degree shutter rule: set it to roughly double your frame rate. That yields 1/48 (rounded to 1/50 on most cameras) at 24fps, 1/50 at 25fps, and 1/60 at 30fps. This produces the natural motion blur the eye expects from cinema. Too fast a shutter (e.g. 1/250) makes motion crisp, stuttery, and videoish; too slow smears it. To keep the 180-degree rule in bright light without stopping down, add an ND filter rather than raising shutter speed.
A Log picture profile records a flat, low-contrast image that preserves the maximum dynamic range your sensor can capture, holding detail in both deep shadows and bright highlights so you can shape contrast deliberately in the grade. The footage looks washed out straight off the card; that is correct and expected. The trade-off is that Log demands accurate exposure and a grading pass, so it is not ideal for fast-turnaround deliverables where you cannot grade.
Use the real profile for your body: S-Log3 with S-Gamut3.Cine on Sony (about 15 stops of dynamic range), V-Log on Panasonic, Canon Log 2 or Canon Log 3 on Cinema EOS, N-Log on Nikon, F-Log2 on Fujifilm, and BRAW or Film gamma on Blackmagic. If you genuinely cannot grade, a 'Log-lite' option like Sony's S-Cinetone or a HLG profile gives a pleasing image with less post work, but you sacrifice latitude.
Expose at or near your camera's base ISO for the cleanest image, and lock white balance to a manual Kelvin value rather than auto so color does not drift shot to shot. Auto white balance will re-guess every time the framing changes, which makes a sequence impossible to match in the edit. Set a deliberate temperature: roughly 3200K for tungsten interiors, 5600K for daylight, and warmer or cooler when you want the look itself to carry mood.
When shooting Log, exposing slightly to the right (overexposing by one to two stops above the rated base ISO, then correcting down in the grade) buys you cleaner shadows, because Log's noise lives in the underexposed lower range. Shallow depth of field is part of the cinematic signature, but it is a tool, not a rule. A wide aperture in the f/1.8 to f/2.8 range isolates a subject against a soft background; stopping down to f/4 to f/5.6 keeps more of the scene sharp, which is often the right call for wide establishing shots and group scenes where everything matters. Faster glass also lets you shoot at base ISO in lower light.
Pair aperture with focal length and distance to control the blur, and prefer fast primes or a quality cine zoom for consistent rendering and minimal focus breathing. On smaller sensors you will need a wider aperture to match the background separation of a full-frame body, which is a key reason DPs weigh full-frame versus APS-C for a given look.
Set these in sequence and the camera locks into a repeatable cinematic baseline. Resolution and codec first, because they are project-level and rarely change. Then frame rate, then shutter to match it. Then your Log profile, then base ISO. Lock white balance. Finally set exposure with an ND filter and false color, and choose aperture for the shot. Run through the list at the top of every shoot day so you never discover an 8-bit 1/250 clip in the edit.
