It is about metering the face deliberately on set with false color, hitting an IRE target that suits the subject's actual skin, and then verifying color in the grade against the vectorscope's skin tone line. Crucially, the right exposure value is not the same for every person; a flat 70 IRE rule that flatters light skin will wash out and discolor darker skin. The professional habit is to set exposure for skin first and let the rest of the frame fall where it may. Once your talent's skin is correctly placed, the image reads as well exposed even if the background is bright or dark, because the viewer's attention is on the person. So the workflow is: frame the shot, find the face, read its exposure with a dedicated tool, and dial aperture, ISO or light until the skin lands on target.
Do not trust the LCD or your eye, especially when shooting Log, which displays flat and misleads you into underexposing. Use a measurement tool: false color is the fastest and most intuitive on set, zebras work for a single threshold, and the waveform shows skin's luminance precisely. The vectorscope is the verification tool for color, used alongside luminance, not instead of it.
False color maps every luminance value in the frame to a color overlay, turning exposure into a glanceable picture. Overexposed highlights show red, deep shadows show purple or blue, and a known middle band represents correctly exposed skin. Set your monitor or camera to false color, point it at the face, and adjust until the skin sits in the target band, which is far faster and more reliable than reading numbers.
On the common false color scale, the relevant bands are: pink for light skin around the 55 to 70 IRE region, grey for middle values, and green sitting around 43 to 47 IRE for darker skin. The on-set rule of thumb is to expose so your talent's skin reads grey/pink (lighter subjects) or grey/green (darker subjects), avoiding the yellow, orange and red bands that mean overexposure. Once you internalize your monitor's specific palette, exposing a face takes seconds.
There is no single correct IRE for skin, because correct exposure depends on the subject's actual reflectance. As a working range, skin luminance generally lives between roughly 40 and 70 IRE. Light to medium skin sits comfortably in the upper part of that range, around 55 to 70 IRE, often cited as a 60 to 70 IRE target. Pushing light skin much above 70 IRE starts to blow out the natural texture and color.
Darker skin should be exposed lower, in roughly the 42 to 58 IRE range, hitting the pink-grey-green zone on false color. The mistake is applying a one-size 70 IRE target to everyone: that overexposes darker skin, washing out its richness and shifting its color, and it underexposes very light skin into greyness. Expose to the subject in front of you. The aim is a face that looks like that person in good light, which means a different number for different people, all of them still riding the same vectorscope skin line.
The vectorscope plots color (hue as angle, saturation as distance from center). Running between the red and yellow targets is a diagonal known as the skin tone line, sitting at roughly 123 degrees. This is the single most useful guide in color: healthy human skin of every ethnicity falls along this line, because the line tracks the color of blood under skin, not the surface tone. The line is about hue, while brightness and saturation, which is to say how light the skin is and how rich the color, vary along and around it.
In the grade, isolate the face and check that the skin's cluster of dots points down the skin line at 123 degrees. If the cluster swings toward red, the skin is too magenta or sunburned; if it swings toward yellow or green, it looks sallow or sickly. Nudge hue back onto the line and the face reads natural. You do not need every pixel pinned exactly on the line, but the dominant direction of the skin cluster should follow it. This is the reliable way to fix a face that 'looks off' but you cannot say why.
Exposure places skin at the right brightness; saturation determines whether it looks like skin or like plastic or a corpse. On the vectorscope, skin saturation generally wants to fall between about 20 and 50 percent of the way from center to the edge, depending on how warm and rich the look is. Too far toward the rim and skin goes orange and cartoonish; too close to center and it looks grey and lifeless. Read distance along the line, not just angle.
White balance underpins all of this. If your white balance is off, the entire image, skin included, is pushed toward a color cast, and no amount of vectorscope nudging fully fixes it. Set a correct manual white balance on set so skin starts near the line, then refine in the grade. The order is: correct exposure (luminance), correct white balance (overall cast), then fine-tune hue onto the skin line and dial saturation, in that sequence, for faces that look effortlessly right.
Put it together into a routine you run every setup. On set: switch on false color, point it at the face, and adjust light, aperture or ISO until the skin sits in its target band, 60 to 70 IRE for lighter subjects, 42 to 58 for darker. Confirm your white balance is set manually for the lighting so color starts clean. Re-check on every lighting and location change rather than assuming the last reading holds.
In the grade: set overall exposure on the waveform, correct any white balance cast, then isolate the face and rotate hue so the skin cluster runs down the 123-degree line, and adjust saturation so it sits roughly 20 to 50 percent out. Done in that order, faces look natural across every shot and every subject, which is the entire job.
