The Sony A7 IV is a 33MP hybrid that shoots genuinely cinematic video once you set it up correctly. The key decisions are which picture profile to use, PP8 with S-Log3 for maximum gradeable dynamic range or PP11 with S-Cinetone for a finished cinematic look out of camera, and understanding that 4K 60p comes with a 1.5x Super 35 crop because the 33MP sensor cannot be read fast enough at full width. PP8 S-Log3 vs PP11 S-Cinetone: choose your look

The A7 IV's picture profiles are how you control the look and dynamic range. PP8 uses the S-Log3 gamma with S-Gamut3.Cine color, giving you the flattest, most flexible 10-bit file with the camera's full dynamic range, intended to be graded in post. PP7 is the same S-Log3 gamma with the wider S-Gamut3 color space. For most creators, PP8 is the S-Log3 profile to choose.

PP11 uses the S-Cinetone gamma, which delivers Sony's pleasing, slightly filmic skin tones and color straight out of camera. It strikes a balance between flat Log and contrasty standard profiles, so you get cinematic color with little or no grading, ideal for YouTube, weddings, and fast turnarounds.

Decide based on your turnaround. If you grade every project and want the most latitude, shoot PP8 S-Log3. If you want to cut and deliver with minimal color work, shoot PP11 S-Cinetone. You can also build a custom PP, but PP8 and PP11 cover the two real workflows for this camera.

The 4K 60p Super 35 crop you must plan around

This is the single most important thing to understand about A7 IV video. The camera oversamples beautiful 4K from a 4.6K capture area at up to 30p in full frame, with no crop. But UHD 4K at 50p/60p is only available in Super 35 (APS-C) mode, applying roughly a 1.5x crop, because the 33MP sensor cannot be read out fast enough across its full width at that speed.

Practically, that means your wide-angle 24mm becomes a ~36mm equivalent the moment you switch to 4K 60p. Plan your lens choices around it: if you need 60p for slow motion and a wide field of view, bring a wider lens or step back. For your main 24p/25p/30p material, stay in full frame for the cleanest oversampled image and the widest angle of view.

There is no full-frame 4K 60p on the A7 IV at all, so if uncropped 4K 60p is a hard requirement, that points you toward an FX3 or FX30 instead. For most hybrid and YouTube work, shooting 24p/30p full frame and accepting the crop only for occasional 60p slow motion is the right compromise.

Codecs and recording quality

XAVC S-I is All-Intra (each frame self-contained) at up to roughly 600 Mbps in 4K, the most robust choice for heavy grading and the best for clips you will push in S-Log3. For graded S-Log3 projects, choose XAVC S-I 4K so you have the most robust frames. For long interviews, events, or anything where card and disk space matter more than maximum grade headroom, XAVC HS is the efficient pick. Always record 10-bit 4:2:2 for video; the 8-bit modes are not worth it on this camera.

Set System Frequency (NTSC 59.94 vs PAL 50.00) to match your delivery and region before the shoot, since changing it reinitializes the card and restarts the camera.

Monitoring S-Log3 and setting exposure

S-Log3 looks washed-out on screen, so use tools, not your eyes. Turn on Gamma Display Assist so the LCD shows a corrected image while still recording flat Log. Enable the Histogram and set Zebra to guard highlights.

Because S-Log3 on the A7 IV has a base ISO of 800 (and is noisier in shadows than a dual-base cinema body), many shooters expose to the right, rating the image brighter than nominal to keep shadows clean, then pull it back in the grade. Aim to put skin tones comfortably above middle and avoid clipping highlights.

If you shoot PP11 S-Cinetone instead, you do not need a LUT; the image on screen is close to your final look, so expose normally using the histogram and zebras and you are essentially done in camera.
