Log is the most misunderstood setting on a modern camera. People enable S-Log3 or V-Log, see a flat grey image, and assume that is the cinematic look. It is not. Log is a gamma curve that crams the sensor's full dynamic range into a recordable signal, and it only pays off if you expose it correctly and grade it afterward. Expose it like a normal image and you bury your shadows in noise. This guide explains how to expose Log properly: what base ISO actually is, why exposing to the right protects your footage, and how to use false color and zebras to place skin and highlights with precision instead of guessing off a washed-out LCD. Standard picture profiles bake in contrast and saturation, clipping highlights and crushing shadows to make a pleasing image straight out of camera. Log instead applies a logarithmic gamma curve that distributes the sensor's full latitude, often around 14 to 16 stops, evenly across the recorded signal. The result is a flat, desaturated image that looks wrong on its own but holds detail from the deepest shadow to the brightest highlight, ready to be shaped in the grade.
Every manufacturer has its own curve: Sony's S-Log3 paired with the S-Gamut3.Cine color space, Panasonic V-Log, Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3, Nikon N-Log, and Fujifilm F-Log2. They share the same principle and the same demand: because the image is recorded flat, exposure errors are amplified in the grade, so getting exposure right on set matters far more with Log than with a baked-in profile.
Base ISO is the native sensitivity at which the sensor delivers its cleanest signal and full rated dynamic range. It is not necessarily the camera's lowest ISO number; it is the point the sensor is engineered around. Most cinema cameras rate their Log profile at a specific base: Sony's FX3 and FX6 base S-Log3 at ISO 800, the Canon C70 sits at ISO 800 in both Canon Log 2 and Log 3, and Panasonic V-Log bodies base around ISO 640.
Shooting at base ISO gives you the maximum highlight and shadow latitude the sensor can deliver. Pulling ISO below base does not add dynamic range and often costs you highlight headroom; pushing far above base eats into shadow detail and adds noise (unless you cross into a second native ISO, covered in the dual native ISO guide). When in doubt, light or filter your way back to base rather than riding the ISO dial.
The single most important Log habit is exposing to the right: deliberately overexposing by roughly one to two stops above the rated base, then bringing the image back down in the grade. Log's noise lives in the underexposed lower portion of the curve, so a brighter capture pushes your shadows up out of the noise floor, and pulling exposure back down in post buries that noise rather than amplifying it. Underexposed Log is the one mistake you genuinely cannot fix.
The practical method on Sony bodies is to expose at base ISO, then rate the camera as if it were slower (for example, treating an 800-base S-Log3 image as if it were ISO 200-400) so the image sits brighter than 'correct.' You then have a known, consistent offset to dial back in the grade. The catch is highlights: ETTR only works until something important clips, so you monitor the top of the range constantly while you push.
You cannot judge Log exposure on a flat LCD, so use a tool that reads the actual signal. False color maps every IRE value in the frame to a color, giving you an instant map of exposure across the whole image: you can see at a glance whether skin sits in the right band and whether any highlight has hit clip. It is the most precise exposure aid available and worth enabling on every Log shoot, internally or on an external monitor.
Zebras are the simpler, always-available alternative. Set one zebra near the clipping point (around 94-95 IRE) as a hard warning that highlights are about to blow, and optionally a second lower zebra (around 70 IRE) as a reference for placing Caucasian skin tones. The histogram and waveform serve the same job from a different angle. Whichever you use, the discipline is identical: place exposure by the meter, not by how the picture looks to your adapted eye.
Manufacturers publish recommended placement for skin and middle grey in their Log curves, and hitting these makes grading predictable. For Sony S-Log3, place a grey card around 41 IRE and Caucasian skin around 48-55 IRE at base; many DPs then add the one-to-two-stop ETTR offset on top. For Panasonic V-Log, middle grey sits at 42 IRE and 90 percent reflectance white at 61 IRE. For Canon Log 2 and Log 3, expose for clean shadows at the ISO 800 base and protect highlights, since Canon Log 2 yields the widest latitude.
These are starting points, not gospel. Lighting ratio, the look you are after, and whether you are protecting a bright window all shift the call. The value of knowing the published targets is that they give you a repeatable reference to deviate from deliberately, rather than exposing blind and hoping the grade saves it.
The biggest error is treating Log as a look and delivering it ungraded; flat, washed-out footage is unfinished, not cinematic. The second is underexposing because the flat image looks 'fine' on the LCD, which buries shadow detail in noise that no denoiser fully recovers. The third is auto ISO or auto exposure, which drifts mid-shot and makes a sequence impossible to match.
Lock ISO to base, lock white balance to a manual Kelvin value, expose to the right while watching false color, and verify highlights are not clipping. Do that consistently and Log delivers exactly what it promises: footage with enormous grading latitude, clean shadows, and detail in every tone, ready to become the look you actually want.

That is exactly what Log is supposed to look like before grading. The flat, desaturated image is the sensor's full dynamic range packed into a recordable signal. It is unfinished footage, not a final look. A grading pass that adds contrast and a color space transform turns it into the cinematic image you are after. If you want a finished image straight out of camera, you need a baked-in profile, not Log.

Only partially, and at a cost. Lifting underexposed Log in the grade also lifts the noise that lives in the shadows, producing grain and color blotching that denoisers soften but never fully remove. This is why the rule with Log is to err bright and expose to the right. Overexposure within highlight limits is recoverable; underexposure is the one error you cannot reliably fix.
