A lyric slams onto the screen on the downbeat. A whispered line drifts in softly at low opacity. A shout scales up faster than feels comfortable. Each of those choices is a directing decision as much as a design one. Ease-in means the animation starts slowly and accelerates — the object or text picks up speed as it moves. This feels like something being pushed from rest. Ease-out means the animation starts fast and decelerates — it feels like something arriving and settling. Ease-in-out combines both, producing an S-curve velocity profile that is the closest approximation to how physical objects actually move.

In kinetic typography, easing choices carry meaning. A word that eases out slowly and gently reads as soft or contemplative. Building Your First Kinetic Type Sequence
