How to Create a Cinematic Look in Your Videos

A cinematic look is the sum of every decision you make from the moment you press record to the final export — here is how to get each one right.

Every editor has reached for that one LUT promising an instant cinematic transformation, and most have been disappointed. A cinematic image is not a filter — it is the result of disciplined choices at every stage of production and post. This lesson walks through each of those choices so you understand not just what to do, but why it works. Some of these decisions need to happen on set; the rest happen in your editing software.

Cinematic Starts in the Camera, Not the Timeline

Before you open your editing software, the single biggest factor in whether your footage can look cinematic is how it was shot. Flat or log picture profiles, proper exposure that protects highlights, and deliberate lighting all give you material that can be shaped in post. Footage shot in a saturated in-camera picture style with blown highlights cannot be fixed later — the data simply is not there.

If you are the editor and not the shooter, communicate this expectation clearly before the shoot. If you are both, shoot in your camera's log or flat profile, expose carefully, and light with intention. Everything in this lesson builds on that foundation.

Frame Rate and Shutter Speed: The Motion Signature

Cinema has historically been shot at 24 frames per second. That frame rate, combined with the natural motion blur created by a 180-degree shutter angle (shutter speed at roughly double the frame rate — so 1/50 sec at 24 fps), produces a specific cadence of motion that audiences associate with film.

Shooting or delivering at 60 fps gives footage a smooth, video-like quality that reads as documentary, sports, or broadcast — not cinema. If you are editing footage shot at a higher frame rate and want a cinematic result, consider retiming the clip to 24 fps in your sequence. The added motion blur from the reinterpretation often helps. If you need slow motion, shoot the high frame rate deliberately and cut it against a 24 fps timeline.

Contrast: The Backbone of a Cinematic Image

Contrast is the most powerful tool in color grading and the one most often mishandled. A cinematic image is not simply dark — it has a specific contrast curve. The shadows are lifted slightly so they never crush to pure black, and the highlights are gently rolled off so bright areas retain detail and texture. This is sometimes called an S-curve, and it mimics the way photochemical film responds to exposure.

In your color grading application, start by lifting your blacks off zero by a small amount — around 5 to 10 points depending on the scene. Then bring your highlights down slightly and add a gentle S-curve to the midtones. The result should feel rich without looking flat, and controlled without looking crushed.

Avoid the temptation to push contrast with a simple high-contrast preset. These typically crush shadows and clip highlights, destroying the texture that makes an image feel dimensional.

Color: Complementary Tones, Not Heavy Grading

The most recognizable cinematic color choices use complementary tones in shadows and highlights — commonly a warm orange or amber in the skin tones and midtones, balanced against a teal or blue-green in the shadows. This combination works because orange and teal sit opposite each other on the color wheel, creating natural visual tension and separation.

That said, color grading should serve the story. A horror film may push greens and desaturate everything. A romantic drama may live in warm ambers. Study the films whose look you admire and identify the actual hue and saturation relationships — do not just guess.

Apply your color grade using Hue vs. Saturation, Hue vs. Hue, and Luma vs. Saturation curves rather than wholesale shifting the entire image. Selective control produces a look that feels deliberate without feeling artificial.

LUTs can be a useful starting point — particularly technical LUTs that convert log footage to a standard color space — but a LUT is rarely a finished grade. Treat it as a starting point and refine from there.

Aspect Ratio and Letterboxing

Most video cameras record in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Feature films are commonly shot in 2.39:1 (anamorphic) or 1.85:1, both of which are wider than 16:9. Adding horizontal letterbox bars to your 16:9 image to create a wider aspect ratio is a common technique, and it does contribute to a cinematic feel — but only when used thoughtfully.

Crop to 2.39:1 by adding black bars that are each about 10 percent of the frame height at the top and bottom of a 16:9 image. This also has a practical benefit: it hides boom microphones and other equipment that sometimes creep into the top or bottom of the frame. However, be aware that cropping reduces the visual information in your frame, so reframe or adjust shots as needed.

  • 2.39:1 is the widest common cinematic ratio — use it for epic or dramatic content
  • 1.85:1 is a softer crop and works well for narrative features and commercials
  • Do not add bars just for aesthetics — make sure your framing supports the wider canvas

Controlling Highlights: Where the Look Lives

One of the clearest signals of professional color work is how highlights are handled. Blown-out white skies, clipped windows, and overexposed skin tones are the hallmarks of amateur footage. Cinematic highlights are detailed, textured, and slightly warm.

In post, use a highlight roll-off curve to gently compress the top of your luminance range. In DaVinci Resolve, the Custom Curves or the Log controls are ideal for this. Pull your highlights down and add a very slight warm tint (red and orange) to the upper range. This mimics the way reversal film renders bright areas and is a core technique in professional colorist work.

If your footage was shot in log, make sure you are applying a proper primary grade or technical LUT before making any creative adjustments — grading log footage without a transform will produce inconsistent and unpredictable results.

Film Grain and Halation: Use With Restraint

Film grain is a byproduct of the silver halide crystals in photochemical film stock. It gives images a tactile, organic quality that digital sensors do not naturally produce. Halation is the soft red or orange glow that appears around bright light sources on film, caused by light scattering through the film base.

Both effects are available as plugins or built-in tools in most editing applications, and both can add a layer of authenticity to a digital grade — when used sparingly. A grain overlay that is too heavy looks like a broken camera. Halation that is too strong looks like a lens flare gone wrong.

The correct amount of grain is typically the smallest amount you can add before asking yourself whether it looks like noise or grain. Halation should be limited to light sources and bright windows — not applied globally. Think of these as seasoning, not the main ingredient.

Pacing: The Edit Itself Is Part of the Look

Cinematography and color create the image, but editing creates the experience. Cinematic pacing is generally slower and more deliberate than commercial or social media content. Shots are held longer. Cuts happen on action, on breath, on musical beats — not just to maintain momentum.

This does not mean slow equals cinematic. It means each cut should be intentional. Let a performance breathe before cutting away. Allow an establishing shot to give the audience a sense of place. Resist the urge to cut every 1.5 seconds because you are worried about losing attention. Trust the image you have created.

Music and sound design are equally important. A beautifully graded film edit with jarring audio will never feel cinematic. Invest the same attention in your mix as you do in your grade.

Can I create a cinematic look if I shot on a smartphone?

Yes, to a degree. Modern smartphones shoot in log or flat profiles and can record at 24 fps. Your biggest limitations will be dynamic range and lens character, but careful lighting, proper frame rate, a thoughtful grade, and disciplined editing can produce a credible cinematic result. The fundamentals apply regardless of camera.

What is the best LUT for a cinematic look?

There is no single best LUT. A technical LUT that converts your camera's log profile to a standard color space — such as Rec.709 — is a necessary starting point if you are working with log footage. Creative LUTs can serve as inspiration, but they should be reduced in opacity and adjusted to suit your specific footage, lighting, and story. A LUT applied at full strength rarely looks like professional work.

Do I have to use DaVinci Resolve for color grading?

No. Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and CapCut all include capable color tools. DaVinci Resolve is the industry standard for dedicated color work because its node-based system offers precise control, and the free version is fully featured for most projects. But the principles in this lesson — contrast curves, selective color, highlight roll-off — apply in any application.

How do I avoid the teal-and-orange look being too obvious?

Reduce the saturation of your color adjustments and apply them selectively. The teal-and-orange grade works because it is subtle — it separates skin tones from backgrounds without announcing itself. If viewers notice your grade before they notice the story, you have pushed too far. Use Hue vs. Saturation curves to desaturate your shadows slightly rather than pushing heavy teal into every dark area.

Is letterboxing necessary for a cinematic look?

No. Many theatrical films are delivered in 1.85:1, which is close to 16:9, and plenty of recognized cinematic work has been delivered in full-frame formats. Letterboxing is a useful compositional and stylistic tool, not a requirement. If your framing and content do not benefit from the wider crop, do not add it just for the aesthetic association.
