Color theory is the set of principles that explains why those messages land the way they do. Editors who understand the color wheel, color harmonies, and the psychological weight of warm and cool tones make grading decisions with intent rather than instinct. This lesson builds that foundation from the ground up.
The color wheel arranges hues in a circular order based on their relationships to each other. Primary colors — red, yellow, and blue in traditional pigment theory, or red, green, and blue in light-based systems like video — sit at equal intervals around the wheel. The human visual system is drawn to areas of high contrast and to colors that are unusual in context. You can exploit this to direct viewer attention without cutting or moving the camera. A subject lit with warmer skin tones in a frame that has been pushed cool will catch the eye immediately because the warm isolated element reads as different. A single saturated element in an otherwise desaturated frame functions as a visual anchor that the viewer returns to repeatedly.
