How to Shoot Slow Motion: High FPS, Shutter, Light and Conform

How to choose a frame rate, set the shutter, feed it enough light, and conform high-fps footage to a clean, buttery slow-motion result.

Slow motion looks effortless and is technically demanding, because slowing time means capturing far more frames per second and paying for it in light. The principle is simple: record at a high frame rate, then play those frames back at a normal rate, so a moment stretches out smoothly. Shoot 120fps and play at 24fps and the action plays at one fifth speed. But high frame rates force a fast shutter, which starves the sensor of light, so slow motion is as much a lighting problem as a camera-settings problem. On top of that you have to choose a frame rate that matches the speed you want, keep the motion blur right, conform the footage correctly in post, and dodge flicker from artificial lights. This guide walks through choosing the frame rate, the shutter rule for high fps, the light you will need, how conforming works, when slow motion actually serves the shot, and the mistakes that ruin it.

How slow motion actually works

Slow motion comes from a mismatch between capture rate and playback rate. You record more frames per second than you play back, so each second of action is spread across more frames and time appears to slow. The slowdown factor is the capture frame rate divided by the project (timeline) frame rate. Shoot 60fps for a 24fps timeline and you get 24/60, about 40 percent speed; shoot 120fps for 24fps and you get 20 percent, one fifth speed; 240fps for 24fps lands around 10 percent.

The key implication: decide your delivery frame rate first (usually 24 or 30fps for cinematic), then pick a capture rate that gives the slowdown you want. There is no point shooting 240fps if you only need a gentle slow-mo, you will lose light and detail for nothing. Match the frame rate to the amount of slowdown the shot calls for.

Shutter speed at high frame rates

The 180-degree shutter rule still applies: set your shutter speed to roughly double your capture frame rate for natural motion blur. At 120fps that means about 1/240s, and at 240fps about 1/480s. Keep the shutter tied to the capture rate, not the playback rate, because the blur is baked in at capture. That natural blur is what makes slow motion look smooth rather than stroboscopic.

You can deviate for effect. A faster shutter than the 180 rule freezes each frame crisply, which can look striking for water droplets, sparks, and impacts where you want every detail razor sharp, at the cost of a slightly staccato feel. A slower shutter than the rule is rarely possible at high fps because the shutter cannot stay open longer than the frame interval. As a default, stick to double the frame rate and only speed up the shutter when you specifically want frozen, crystalline detail.

Light: the hidden cost of slow motion

A fast shutter means each frame is exposed for a tiny slice of time, so far less light reaches the sensor and the image goes dark. This is the number one reason amateur slow motion looks noisy: shooters crank ISO to compensate and bury the footage in grain. The professional answer is to add light, a lot of it, rather than raising ISO. Slow motion is a light-hungry format and is far easier outdoors in sun or in a brightly lit studio than in dim interiors.

Plan your lighting around the speed loss before you roll. Bring more powerful sources than you would for normal-speed work, keep ISO as low as you can for a clean image, and only open the aperture as a secondary lever (it costs you depth of field). If you must shoot slow-mo in low light, accept a higher frame rate is off the table and drop to a gentler one (say 60fps) so the shutter is slower and lets in more light. Light first, ISO last.

Beware flicker and banding

Many artificial lights pulse with the mains frequency (cycling at 100 or 120Hz depending on region), invisible at normal frame rates but very visible as flicker or rolling dark bands once you shoot at high fps. LED panels with cheap drivers and older fluorescents are the worst offenders, and the result is a strobing image that is hard or impossible to fix in post.

Avoid it by using flicker-free light sources rated for high-speed shooting, daylight or HMI sources, or quality LEDs with high-frequency, flicker-free drivers. You can also choose a frame rate and shutter that are multiples of the mains frequency to sync with the pulse, but the safer route on a shoot is simply to use lights you know are flicker-free and to test on the monitor at your target frame rate before you commit. Always do a quick high-fps test of every light in the scene, including practicals and background screens.

Conforming in post

How your editor handles the high-fps clip determines the result. Some cameras record high-fps footage already conformed (slowed and saved at the project rate), so it plays slow straight off the card. Others record at the high frame rate as a normal-speed file, and you slow it down in the edit by interpreting or retiming it to the project rate, this is conforming.

In a 24fps timeline, a 120fps clip conforms to about 20 percent speed (one fifth), and a 240fps clip to about 10 percent. Use your editor's interpret-footage or speed-change tools to set the clip to play at the timeline rate so you keep every captured frame for the smoothest result, rather than asking software to invent frames. Avoid relying on optical-flow frame interpolation to fake slow motion from normal-rate footage unless you have no choice, it can warp edges and produce artifacts. Real captured frames always beat synthesized ones.

When to use slow motion (and when not to)

Slow motion is a tool with intent, not a default effect. It earns its place when it reveals something the eye misses, the splash of liquid, a fabric flowing, a facial micro-expression, the arc of an athletic move, or when it adds emotional weight, beauty, and emphasis to a hero moment in a music video or commercial. It rewards subjects with motion and texture: water, hair, dust, crowds, action.

It hurts when overused. Slowing static dialogue or talking heads just makes them feel sluggish; slapping slow-mo on everything drains its impact, and excessive slowdown on a too-low frame rate looks juddery. Reserve it for moments that benefit, shoot those at the right frame rate from the start (you cannot add real slow motion in post), and keep most of your footage at normal speed so the slow-mo lands. Used sparingly and lit properly, it is one of the most powerful tools in the kit.
