Editing is fundamentally a time machine — every cut is a decision about where in time the audience lives next.
Real time is the enemy of storytelling. A character driving across town takes twenty minutes in reality and should take about four seconds on screen. A boxing match that unfolds over three rounds can be compressed into a punishing sixty-second montage, or a single punch can be stretched across three slow-motion cuts lasting longer than the blow itself. The editor controls all of this. Understanding how editing manipulates time — compressing it, expanding it, rearranging it — is one of the most powerful conceptual tools you can develop. Once you see how time is constructed in the edit, you will never watch a film the same way again.
Every edited film operates across two distinct timelines simultaneously. Story time is the duration of the events being depicted — the hours, days, or years that the narrative spans. Screen time is the duration of the film itself, the actual minutes and seconds the audience sits in their seat. The editor's job is to compress, expand, or rearrange story time so that it fits purposefully into screen time.
In a conventional feature film, story time almost always exceeds screen time by an enormous margin. A film about a decades-long friendship might run ninety minutes. A thriller set over a single afternoon might also run ninety minutes. The relationship between story time and screen time is not fixed — it is a creative choice that defines the pace, rhythm, and emotional weight of the entire film.
The moment you internalize this distinction, you start asking the right editorial question: not 'what happened next?' but 'which moments from what happened next does the audience actually need to see?'
Ellipsis is the omission of time. Every straight cut that jumps forward in story time is an ellipsis — a deliberate gap that the editor asks the audience to fill in. Most cuts in any film are elliptical to some degree; even cutting from one line of dialogue to the next skips the breath between them.
The larger and more intentional the ellipsis, the more the editor must signal it. Audiences read time jumps through contextual cues: a change in location, a shift in lighting from day to night, a costume change, an altered setting. When those cues are present, even a jump of years reads as coherent. When they are absent and the edit cuts between two nearly identical images of the same action, the result is a jump cut — a jarring skip that signals either an error or a deliberate stylistic disruption.

An editor builds the picture cut to fit the music's natural phrasing, using the end of a musical phrase or a key lyric as the exit point back into real-time narrative.
Soviet filmmakers of the 1920s used montage for intellectual rather than temporal compression — Eisenstein's collision of images was meant to generate ideas, not skip time. This fragmentation does not confuse the audience because each angle shows the same moment from a different perspective; the result is not temporal incoherence but temporal depth.
Editors use expansion deliberately when a moment carries more emotional weight than its objective duration suggests. A reunion after years apart might last thirty seconds in real time; expanded through intercutting of reaction shots, slow-motion, and close-ups of small details, it can occupy two or three screen minutes while feeling completely justified.
Compression and expansion both move time forward — they change how fast the story progresses, not its direction. Flashbacks and flash-forwards change direction entirely, allowing the editor to move the audience backward or forward in story time and then return them to the narrative present.
A flashback is effective when the information it reveals changes the meaning of what the audience has already seen. Used poorly, a flashback simply tells the audience something they could have been told in the present tense. Used well — as in a revelation that recontextualizes a character's behavior throughout the entire film — a flashback transforms what the audience thought they understood and forces them to reinterpret everything that came before.
Flash-forwards are rarer and carry higher risk. Showing the audience a future event before it happens can build dread and dramatic irony — the audience knows something the characters do not — but it surrenders the element of surprise. Films like Arrival and Memento use non-linear time structures that include both flash-forwards and flashbacks as their fundamental organizing principle, making temporal rearrangement the subject of the film rather than a narrative device within it.
The key editorial question when cutting to any non-present timeline is: does the audience know where in time they are, and do they need to? Some films signal every flashback with a visual treatment — a color grade shift, a lens blur, a title card. Others trust context to carry the audience without labeling. Both approaches can work. The failure mode is leaving the audience genuinely confused about when they are, which breaks their engagement with the story rather than deepening it.
Editors choose among these temporal techniques based on what each scene needs emotionally and narratively. A scene that needs to move the story forward efficiently calls for ellipsis or cutaways. A scene that needs to convey process, growth, or the passage of significant time calls for a montage sequence. A scene whose dramatic value lies in a single action — a blow, a kiss, a death — calls for expansion through slow motion or intercutting. A scene whose meaning depends on what came before or what comes later calls for a flashback or flash-forward.
The most common editorial mistake with time is defaulting to one mode regardless of context. Editors who cut everything at scene pace, without compression, produce films that feel slow and overstuffed with obligatory connective tissue. Editors who rely too heavily on montage produce films that feel emotionally shallow — we are told that time has passed but we do not feel it. The best editors match their temporal tool to the emotional texture of each specific moment.
As you develop your editorial instincts, train yourself to ask, at the start of every scene, what time is actually doing in this sequence. Is time the obstacle — something to be efficiently traversed? Is time the subject — the passage of it the very thing the scene is about? Or is time the magnifying glass, slowing to focus the audience's attention on a moment of maximum emotional pressure? The answer shapes every cut you make.

A flashback feels seamless when the audience understands why the story is moving backward — when the emotional or narrative logic of the present moment naturally calls up the past. The cut into the flashback should be motivated by something in the scene: a detail, a line of dialogue, a sound or image that triggers the memory. Visual or audio cues can help audiences orient themselves in the past timeline, but the most important factor is that the flashback reveals something that meaningfully changes or deepens the audience's understanding of the present.
A great montage sequence earns every second it occupies by moving the story forward and making the audience feel the passage of time.
