Any way of moving from one shot to the next, from a cut to a dissolve.

A transition is the bridge between two shots. The cut is the simplest; dissolves, fades, wipes and digital effects are more visible alternatives. Transitions should be motivated — a dissolve to suggest passing time, a fade to close a section — rather than decorative for their own sake.
