Subclip

A subclip is a named slice carved out of a longer source clip. It points back to the same underlying media file but stores its own in and out range, so you can treat a useful section of a long take as a standalone item in the bin. Subclips do not duplicate media, so they cost almost no disk space. Editors create them to break a forty-minute interview or a long event recording into manageable, labeled chunks, making it far easier to scan and pull selects than scrubbing one giant clip. Depending on the NLE you can edit subclip boundaries or expand back to the full master when you need surrounding frames. They are a fundamental organizing tool in any documentary or long-form workflow.
