Video Editing Glossary

Split Edit

An edit where audio and video cut at different points (a J-cut or L-cut).

In a split edit, the sound and picture transitions are offset rather than cutting together. Leading with audio creates a J-cut; trailing audio creates an L-cut. Split edits make cuts feel smooth and conversational.
