Sound Effect

A discrete recorded or designed sound added to picture to represent a specific action or event.

A sound effect is a specific, deliberate sound tied to an action or object on screen, from a door slam or footstep to a sword swing or sci-fi blast. Effects are layered in during the sound edit to make the picture feel tactile and real, since production audio rarely captures clean, punchy versions of these moments. Editors pull from libraries, record custom Foley, or design synthetic sounds, then sync each hit precisely to the frame of the action. Beyond realism, effects carry emotion and emphasis, making a punch land harder or a machine feel menacing. A mixer balances them against dialogue and music, placing them in the stereo or surround field and shaping their tone with EQ and reverb so they sit naturally in the scene's space rather than feeling pasted on.
