Room Tone

The ambient background sound of a location, used to smooth audio edits.

Room tone is the subtle ambient sound of a space when no one is speaking. Editors lay it under dialogue and use it to fill gaps so that audio edits don't create jarring pockets of total silence. Capturing room tone on set is a small step that saves the edit.
