Ripple Edit

A ripple edit adjusts one edit point and moves everything downstream by the same amount so no gap or overlap appears. Trim a clip shorter and the rest of the timeline slides earlier; trim it longer and they slide later. This differs from a roll edit, which only moves the shared boundary between two clips without changing total length. Editors use ripple trims constantly when tightening pacing, removing dead air, or cutting a few frames off the head of a shot while keeping the cut rhythm of the whole sequence intact. The risk is losing sync with separately tracked audio or other layers, so most NLEs offer a ripple that affects all tracks or only the targeted one.
