Video Editing Glossary

Log Footage

Flat, low-contrast footage that preserves dynamic range for grading.

Log (logarithmic) footage looks washed-out and grey straight from camera because it stores a wide range of highlight and shadow detail. It is meant to be graded — a technical LUT or manual work restores normal contrast and color. Log gives the colorist maximum flexibility.
