Insert Edit

An insert edit drops a new clip into the timeline at the playhead and ripples everything after it further down, so nothing already on the track gets covered. It is the opposite of an overwrite: instead of replacing existing footage, it lengthens the sequence by the duration of the inserted clip. Editors use insert edits when building a cut from scratch or dropping a missing shot into the middle of an assembled sequence, because the surrounding timing stays intact and only shifts later. In most NLEs it maps to a dedicated key (often the comma) or button. The trade-off is that an insert affects every track unless you target specific ones, so editors watch sync between picture and audio when inserting mid-sequence.
