Gamut

Gamut is the total set of colors a display, camera, or color space can reproduce, usually visualized as a triangle inside the larger horseshoe of human vision. A wider gamut like Rec. 2020 or DCI-P3 can show deeper, more saturated reds and greens than a narrow one like Rec. 709. It matters because pushing saturation beyond a target gamut clips colors, flattening detail and causing odd hue shifts. A colorist watches a gamut or vectorscope to keep saturated elements inside the legal boundary, and uses gamut mapping when moving a wide-gamut master down to a smaller delivery space. Respecting the gamut keeps neon signs, flowers, and bold wardrobe vivid without breaking on consumer screens or failing broadcast QC.
