Exposure

The overall brightness of an image, from shadows to highlights.

Exposure refers to how light or dark an image is. Correct exposure preserves detail in both shadows and highlights; overexposed footage loses highlight detail (clipping) and underexposed footage loses shadow detail and gains noise. Editors balance exposure in correction, but it is best captured well in camera.
