Avid's intermediate codec for high-quality, edit-friendly HD video, comparable in role to Apple ProRes.
DNxHD is Avid's intra-frame mastering and editing codec, the cross-platform counterpart to ProRes and a staple of Avid Media Composer pipelines. Like ProRes it compresses each frame independently, giving fast, reliable playback and trimming with little generation loss across edits. It is specified by bitrate at a given resolution and frame rate (for example DNxHD 145 or 220), letting facilities standardize on a known data rate. Its successor DNxHR extends the same approach to 2K, 4K, and beyond with resolution-independent quality tiers from LB up to 444. Editors use DNxHD/HR as offline or online intermediates, for interchange between Windows and Mac systems, and for masters where Avid compatibility matters. It is a dependable, broadcast-proven format when ProRes encoding is not convenient.
