Video Editing Glossary

Cut

The most basic edit: an instant change from one shot to the next with no transition.

A cut is the fundamental unit of editing — an instantaneous switch from one shot to another. It is the default transition in almost all video, precisely because it is invisible: the eye accepts it as a natural shift in attention. Every other transition is a deliberate departure from the cut, so learning when and where to cut is the core craft of editing.
