Video Editing Glossary

Container

The file wrapper (like MP4 or MOV) that holds video, audio and metadata.

A container or wrapper format — MP4, MOV, MKV — bundles the video stream, audio streams and metadata into one file. The container is separate from the codec inside it. The same codec can live in different containers.
