Color Space

A color space is the agreed-upon map for how numeric pixel values translate into actual colors, defined by its primaries (the reddest red, greenest green, bluest blue it can hit), a white point, and a transfer function or gamma. Rec. 709, DCI-P3, and Rec. 2020 are common examples. It matters because the same RGB numbers look different in different spaces, so mismatches cause shifts in hue and contrast. In practice, an editor sets the project, monitor, and export color space to match the deliverable, and a colorist uses color management or transforms to move footage from a camera's native space into the working space. Getting the color space right is the foundation that keeps grades consistent from timeline to final export.
