Clipping

Distortion from a signal exceeding its maximum — in audio or image.

Clipping happens when a signal is pushed past its limit: audio that peaks above 0 dB distorts harshly, and image highlights pushed past white lose all detail. Both are usually irreversible, so editors leave headroom. Watching levels and scopes prevents it.
