B-Roll

Supplementary footage cut over the main footage to illustrate or cover edits.

B-roll is the secondary footage — establishing shots, details, action, cutaways — layered over the primary 'A-roll' (such as an interview or to-camera talk). It illustrates what's being said, adds production value, and conveniently hides cuts in the main audio. Good b-roll is one of the fastest ways to lift a video from amateur to professional.
