Audio normalization scans a clip or mix and applies a single gain change so it reaches a defined target, either a peak level or a perceived loudness value. Peak normalization sets the loudest sample to a chosen ceiling, while loudness normalization, measured in LUFS, matches the average perceived volume that platforms and broadcasters require. For delivery this is essential: streaming services and broadcast standards specify integrated loudness targets like minus 14 LUFS or minus 23 LUFS, and a mix must be normalized to that spec or it gets turned up or down automatically on playback. An editor measures the program with a loudness meter, then normalizes to hit the target while keeping true peaks under the allowed dBTP ceiling. Unlike compression, normalization only shifts overall level and does not reshape the dynamics within.
