Frame Rates Explained: fps, Slow Motion & Shutter

Frame rate is one of the most fundamental settings on any camera — and choosing the wrong one can kill the look you're going for before you've made a single cut.

Every video is really just a sequence of still images played back fast enough that the brain reads it as motion. The number of those images per second is your frame rate, written as fps. Whether footage looks cinematic, broadcast-ready, buttery smooth, or ideal for slow motion all comes down to frame rate decisions made before the record button is pressed. This lesson covers the most common frame rates, what each one is used for, how to shoot high fps for slow-motion footage, and the shutter rule that keeps motion blur looking natural at any frame rate.

What Frame Rate Actually Means

fps stands for frames per second — the number of individual still images your camera captures (or your timeline plays back) every second. At 24fps, you're seeing 24 photographs in rapid sequence each second. At 120fps, you're seeing 120. The higher the number, the more information is captured about what happened during that second.

The human visual system doesn't perceive individual frames at these speeds — it reads the sequence as continuous motion. But the number of frames still has a significant perceptual effect. Lower frame rates tend to look more cinematic and filmic because they allow each frame to carry a slight blur from motion. Higher frame rates look smoother and more hyper-real because more frames capture finer steps of movement. Neither is objectively better — they serve different creative and technical purposes.

Frame rate is set independently in two places: in your camera when you shoot, and in your editing software when you create a project. Understanding how those two settings interact is essential for getting the result you want.

24fps: The Cinematic Standard

24fps — sometimes written as 23.976fps in digital contexts — is the frame rate associated with film and cinema. It became the standard in the early sound film era because it was the lowest frame rate at which synchronized audio remained stable, making it economical on film stock. Decades of movies shot at 24fps have conditioned audiences to associate this frame rate with narrative storytelling, drama, and a certain quality of dreamlike immersion.

The look of 24fps is partly about the motion blur each frame carries. Because less time is compressed into each frame at lower frame rates, moving objects trail slightly from one frame to the next. That subtle blur is what gives cinematic footage its characteristic softness in motion. It's not a flaw — it's part of the aesthetic.

If you're shooting narrative film, music videos, documentary work intended for theatrical or streaming platforms, or any video where a filmic aesthetic is the goal, 24fps is almost always the right starting point.

25fps and 30fps: Broadcast and Web Standards

25fps is the broadcast standard in countries using the PAL television system, which covers most of Europe, Australia, and large parts of Asia and Africa. It's close enough to 24fps that it retains a filmic quality, but it was originally tied to the 50Hz electrical grid frequency used in those regions, which helped cameras and televisions avoid flicker when shooting under artificial light.

30fps — more precisely 29.97fps — is the equivalent standard for NTSC regions, including the United States, Canada, Japan, and parts of Latin America, where the electrical grid runs at 60Hz. Historically, broadcast television in these regions ran at 30fps, and the standard carried forward into digital video.

Today, 30fps is commonly used for YouTube content, social media video, corporate video, news, and anything designed primarily for screen viewing rather than theatrical projection. It looks noticeably smoother and crisper than 24fps, particularly during camera movement and action. Some creators shoot YouTube content at 30fps specifically because it looks sharp and clean on monitors — it's a deliberate stylistic choice, not a compromise.

When shooting, the choice between 25 and 30fps usually comes down to your region and delivery platform. If you're shooting under artificial light, matching your frame rate to your local grid frequency (25fps in PAL regions, 30fps in NTSC regions) reduces the risk of flicker from light sources cycling with the grid.

50fps and 60fps: Smooth Motion and Sports

50fps and 60fps are the higher-end real-time frame rates — meaning footage shot at these rates is intended to be played back at the same frame rate, not slowed down. The result is extremely smooth motion with minimal blur. Every step of movement is captured in fine detail, and the image appears almost hyper-realistic.

This look is standard in live sports broadcasts, news coverage, video games, and virtual reality content, where clarity of fast action matters more than a cinematic aesthetic. It can also work well for tutorial-style content where hand movements or product details need to be seen clearly.

The tradeoff is that 50fps and 60fps footage can feel almost too smooth for narrative or emotional content — a phenomenon sometimes called the "soap opera effect," because older daytime television shot at high frame rates. When viewers are conditioned to associate lower frame rates with higher production value, smoother footage can paradoxically feel cheaper, even when technically superior.

60fps is also frequently used as a shooting format specifically to enable 2x slow motion when the project frame rate is 30fps, so the line between "high-speed real-time" and "slow-motion source footage" is blurry at this frame rate.

Shooting High fps for Slow Motion

Slow motion is created when you shoot at a higher frame rate than your project's playback frame rate. Because you've captured more frames per second than the timeline will play back, the software stretches that footage over more time — and everything appears to slow down proportionally.

The math is straightforward. If your project plays at 24fps and you shot your footage at 120fps, that footage has five times the frames needed for each second of playback. When you drop it on the timeline and slow it to 20% speed, it plays back at exactly 24fps with no loss of image quality or smoothness — you get five seconds of silky slow motion for every one second of original footage.

Common slow-motion ratios and the frame rates that produce them:

It's worth noting that not all cameras can shoot high frame rates at full resolution. Many cameras will drop to 1080p or lower, or reduce the sensor area (crop the image), when shooting at 120fps or above. Always check your camera's specifications before planning a shoot that relies on slow motion, and factor in any crop factor that affects your field of view.

  • 60fps footage in a 30fps project = 2x slow motion (50% speed)
  • 120fps footage in a 24fps project = 5x slow motion (20% speed)
  • 240fps footage in a 24fps project = 10x slow motion (10% speed)
  • Higher frame rates require more light — shutter speed increases, so less light per frame

The 180-Degree Shutter Rule

Once you know your frame rate, the 180-degree shutter rule tells you what shutter speed to use to get natural-looking motion blur. The rule comes from film cameras, where the shutter was a spinning disc with an opening cut into it — a 180-degree opening meant the shutter was open for exactly half of each frame's time.

In digital terms, the rule translates to a simple formula: set your shutter speed to approximately double your frame rate. Shooting at 24fps? Set your shutter to 1/48 of a second — or the nearest available setting, usually 1/50. Shooting at 30fps? Use 1/60. Shooting at 60fps for real-time playback? Use 1/120.

Following this rule produces motion blur that matches what the human eye expects to see when watching movement. Deviate from it and the footage starts to look wrong in characteristic ways. A shutter speed much faster than double the frame rate — say 1/1000 at 24fps — produces unnaturally sharp individual frames with almost no blur between positions of moving objects, creating a staccato, stuttery look. This effect is used intentionally in films like Saving Private Ryan to create urgency and disorientation, but it reads as jarring when used without purpose.

A shutter speed much slower than double the frame rate produces excessive motion blur, making footage look smeared and soft during movement. This is generally undesirable except as a deliberate stylistic choice.

Matching Project Frame Rate to Footage

When you create a new project in your editing software, you set a project frame rate. This is the frame rate your timeline will play back and the frame rate your export will be delivered at. Everything you put on that timeline needs to be reconciled with this setting.

The cleanest scenario is when all your footage was shot at the same frame rate as your project. A clip shot at 24fps dropped into a 24fps timeline plays back normally — no conversion, no artifacts, no speed changes.

Problems arise when you mix footage shot at different frame rates. If you drop 30fps footage into a 24fps timeline without flagging it for frame rate interpretation, your editing software will either drop frames (causing a slight stuttering) or blend frames together, both of which degrade image quality. The solution is to right-click the clip in your media browser, find the interpret or clip settings option, and tell the software the clip's native frame rate so it handles playback correctly.

The other common scenario is intentional: dropping high-fps slow-motion footage into a lower-fps timeline, then adjusting the clip speed to the appropriate percentage to play it back in smooth slow motion, as described in the previous section. Most professional NLEs — including DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Final Cut Pro — handle this workflow reliably when the clip's native frame rate is set correctly.

  • Always set your project frame rate before importing footage when possible
  • Match project frame rate to your primary footage — slow-motion clips are the exception
  • Use clip interpretation settings in your NLE to declare the native frame rate of each clip
  • Export at your project frame rate unless the delivery spec requires otherwise
FAQ
Does frame rate affect file size?

Yes, directly. Higher frame rates mean more frames are recorded per second, which increases the amount of data captured. A one-minute clip at 120fps will be substantially larger than the same clip at 24fps, assuming the same resolution and codec. This also affects storage requirements and the processing load on your editing computer.

Can I change the frame rate of footage after I've already shot it?

You can interpret or convert footage to a different frame rate in post, but it comes with quality costs. Retiming software can do a reasonable job of interpolating new frames, but it's not the same as actually capturing that information on camera. For slow motion specifically, there's no substitute for shooting at a high frame rate — artificially slowing down 24fps footage will produce blurry, blended frames rather than genuine slow motion.

Why do some cameras offer 23.976fps instead of exactly 24fps?

23.976fps is a legacy of the NTSC color television standard, which ran at exactly 29.97fps (not 30fps) to accommodate the color signal. When film needed to be transferred to NTSC video, a conversion called a 3:2 pulldown was applied, which required the source to be 23.976fps rather than exactly 24fps. Modern digital delivery generally accepts true 24fps, but 23.976fps is still the default on many cameras and NLEs for compatibility reasons. The difference is negligible in practice — treat them as interchangeable unless a specific deliverable requires true 24.

What frame rate should I use for Instagram Reels, TikTok, or YouTube Shorts?

All three platforms accept and display footage at 24fps, 30fps, or 60fps without issue. For most short-form social content, 30fps is a reliable choice — it looks sharp, is widely supported, and renders efficiently. If your content involves fast movement or you want maximum smoothness, 60fps is a solid option. Cinematic-style short films or music videos shot in a filmic style benefit from 24fps. The platform will not penalize you for any of these choices.

What happens if I ignore the 180-degree shutter rule?

You'll still get usable footage — the rule is a guideline for natural-looking motion, not a technical requirement for exposure. Shooting with a much faster shutter speed (common when shooting outdoors in bright light without ND filters) produces sharper individual frames and a staccato, choppy quality to movement that most viewers find subtly wrong. This is why cinematographers use neutral density (ND) filters outdoors — they reduce the light entering the lens so you can maintain the correct shutter speed without overexposing the image.
