Real slow motion is recorded, not faked in post — here is how to capture, conform, and retime high-fps footage the right way.
Slow motion is one of the most overused and most misunderstood techniques in editing. Done well, it isolates a moment — a splash, a smile, a stride — and lets it land with weight. Done badly, it stutters, smears, or looks plasticky. The single most important thing to understand is that genuine slow motion is captured at a high frame rate and played back slower, while software-only slow motion stretches normal footage and invents frames that were never there. This guide covers both paths: how to conform high-fps clips so they play correctly, when and how to use optical-flow retiming, how to build expressive speed ramps, and how to grade and export so your slow motion looks intentional rather than accidental.
Copy and verify all clips, then check the capture frame rate of each. Note which slow-motion shots you have and whether the camera recorded them conformed (already slow) or at full speed tagged as high fps.
Create your sequence at your delivery frame rate — commonly 24, 25, or 30fps. This is the reference against which all your high-fps clips will be slowed, so lock it in before you start retiming.
For the cleanest slow motion, use Interpret Footage in Premiere or clip attributes in Resolve to interpret high-fps clips at your timeline rate. This plays every real frame slowly with no interpolation.
If you need footage slower than the capture rate allows, enable optical flow for the retime, but limit it to clean, separable motion. Preview at full quality and fall back to frame blending if artifacts appear.
For dynamic moments, keyframe speed to ramp from full speed into slow motion at the action's peak and back out. Add ease-in and ease-out to the keyframes so the transitions glide rather than jolt.
Place slow-motion shots where they earn their weight — peaks, reveals, emotional beats — and keep them short enough to land without dragging. Cut on motion and let music reinforce the change in pace.
Give your slow-motion shots a slightly richer grade so they feel deliberate, but keep them consistent with the surrounding full-speed footage so the look stays unified across the edit.
Export at your timeline's frame rate in a high-quality codec, then deliver in H.264 at the correct resolution and aspect ratio for your platform. Do not introduce frame-rate conversion at export, which can reintroduce stutter.
Slow motion is a relationship between two frame rates: how many frames per second you captured and how many you play back. Shoot at 120fps and play it back in a 24fps timeline, and the action plays at one-fifth speed — five times slower — with perfectly smooth motion because every frame is real. The higher you shoot, the slower you can go while staying smooth.
This is why slow motion is a decision you make at capture, not in post. If you only have 24 or 30fps footage and want it slower, your software has to either drop into a jittery frame-blend or generate brand-new frames by guessing what happened between the real ones. That can work, but it is a recovery technique, not a substitute for shooting high frame rate in the first place.
A 120fps clip can be interpreted two ways. Some cameras record it already slowed (conformed), so it drops onto a timeline playing slow. Others record at the high rate but tag it as 120fps, so it plays at full speed until you tell your editor to interpret it slower. Knowing which you have prevents confusion when footage plays back faster than expected.
The cleanest method is to interpret the footage to your timeline frame rate. In Premiere, right-click and use Modify > Interpret Footage to assume the clip is, say, 24fps; in DaVinci Resolve, set the clip's retime and scaling or change its frame rate in the clip attributes. This conforms every frame to real, played-back-slow motion with no frame blending or interpolation — the highest-quality slow motion possible.
When you need footage slower than your capture rate allows — or you only have standard-rate footage — your editor fills the gaps with new frames. There are three methods. Frame sampling (nearest) repeats frames and looks stuttery. Frame blending dissolves between frames and creates a soft ghosting. Optical flow analyzes motion and generates genuinely new in-between frames, which looks smoothest but can produce warping artifacts around fast or overlapping edges.
Optical flow is the best choice for moderate speed reductions on footage with clean, separable motion. It struggles with motion blur, transparent objects, water, and anything where edges cross unpredictably. Always preview optical-flow results at full quality before committing — the artifacts often hide until you look closely, and they are far more distracting than a slight stutter.
A speed ramp transitions between speeds within a single shot — full speed into slow motion and back out — and it is one of the most dynamic tools in editing. The classic move drops to slow motion at the peak of an action, then ramps back to normal speed as it resolves, which makes the slow section feel earned rather than arbitrary.
Ramps work best when the transitions are smoothed with ease-in and ease-out on the speed keyframes, so the change feels like a glide rather than a jolt. For the cleanest ramps, shoot the whole action at high frame rate so you have real frames to ramp through, and place your speed transitions on moments of natural motion blur or impact where the eye is least likely to notice the change.
High-fps shooting demands more light and a faster shutter, and both affect how your slow motion looks in the edit even though they happen at capture. A fast shutter freezes each frame crisply, which can make slow motion look sharp and clinical; a shutter near the 180-degree rule for the capture rate keeps natural motion blur. You cannot add real motion blur convincingly in post, so this is largely set in stone by the time you edit.
In the grade, slow-motion shots often benefit from being treated as hero moments — a touch more contrast, a slightly richer look — because the viewer is being asked to dwell on them. Just keep the grade consistent with the surrounding full-speed footage so the slow shot feels like part of the same world, not a clip pasted in from somewhere else.

Shooting 60fps and playing in a 24fps timeline gives roughly 40 percent speed — a gentle slow motion. 120fps gives one-fifth speed, and 240fps gives one-tenth, for dramatic super-slow shots. Match the capture rate to how much you intend to slow the action down, and remember higher rates need more light.
Optical flow is a retiming method that analyzes motion between frames and generates new in-between frames, producing the smoothest software slow motion. Use it for moderate slowdowns on clean, separable motion. It struggles with water, motion blur, transparency, and overlapping edges, so always preview at full quality and switch to frame blending if you see warping artifacts.
