Open DaVinci Resolve and create a new project from the Project Manager. Before importing any footage, go to File and open Project Settings. A node in Resolve is a processing step applied to your image in sequence. Think of it like a chain: your raw image goes in at the left, each node applies a correction, and the finished result comes out at the right. The most important node you will ever use is the first one — typically called a Corrector node — where you set your primary grade. Primary corrections include lift (shadows), gamma (midtones), gain (highlights), contrast, and saturation. Use the Color Wheels or the Log Wheels in the left panel to make these adjustments, and always use your scopes rather than your eye alone to judge exposure.
For your first session on the Color page, focus on three things: setting your blacks, setting your whites, and correcting your white balance. If your shadows are lifted and muddy, bring lift down. If your highlights are clipped, pull gain down. If your image looks too warm or too cool, adjust the temperature balance in your primaries until neutrals read as neutral on your parade scope. This technical balance is the foundation every creative grade is built on — skip it and your look will always feel slightly off.
Once you have a balanced image, add a second node for your creative look. Right-click the first node, select Add Node, and choose Serial. This keeps your balance on node one and your creative choices on node two, which makes it easy to revisit and adjust each independently.
Fairlight is a fully featured digital audio workstation and it can seem like overkill for a simple edit — but you do not need to learn all of it to get good results. For most video projects, you need to know three things: how to balance track levels, how to apply basic EQ and compression, and how to export with the audio properly embedded.
On the Fairlight page, each track appears as a channel strip with a fader, a pan control, and slots for effects inserts. To add EQ or compression to a track, click the empty insert slot and choose from the built-in plugins. The FairlightFX suite includes a parametric equalizer, a compressor, a limiter, a noise reducer, and a de-esser — all of which are genuinely useful and more than adequate for most creator workflows.
For music videos and content that uses a full music track, your main job in Fairlight is making sure the music level sits correctly against any narration, dialogue, or sound effects, and that your overall mix levels are not clipping. The Deliver page is where your finished video comes out.
