After Effects looks intimidating, but the core ideas are simple. Learn comps, layers, and keyframes and you can animate almost anything.
After Effects is the tool editors reach for when a timeline cannot do the job: animated titles, lower thirds, logo stings, callouts, and motion graphics. It is not a video editor in the traditional sense, and approaching it like Premiere is a recipe for confusion. After Effects is a layer-based compositor where you animate properties over time using keyframes. Once that core idea clicks, the rest of the program opens up. This guide is written for editors who already cut video and want to add motion graphics to their toolkit. We will cover compositions, layers, keyframes, easing, and a simple animated title from scratch.
Start a new composition and set its resolution, frame rate, and duration to match your main edit, for example 1920 by 1080 at your project's frame rate. Getting these right at the start prevents re-timing or rescaling later. The composition is your canvas and timeline; everything you build will live inside it, and matching your delivery settings means the result drops back into your edit cleanly.
Use the Text tool to click in the composition and type your title. The text becomes its own layer in the timeline, stacked above any background layers. Style it with your chosen font, size, and color in the Character panel. Position it where you want it to end up on screen, since you will animate it into and out of that resting position in the following steps.
Before animating, set the layer's anchor point to the center of the text so it scales and rotates around its middle rather than a corner. Use the center-anchor-point tool or shortcut to snap it into place. This single habit prevents the most common beginner frustration, where elements pivot or grow from an unexpected point and the animation looks wrong.
Twirl open the layer's Transform properties to reveal Position, Scale, Rotation, and Opacity. Decide your animation, such as fading and scaling the title in. Click the stopwatch next to Opacity and Scale to enable keyframing at the start, setting Opacity to zero and Scale slightly small. This records your starting state at the current point in time.
Move the playhead forward by a short span, perhaps half a second to a second. Change Opacity to one hundred percent and Scale to its full size. After Effects automatically creates new keyframes and interpolates the values in between, producing a smooth fade-and-grow entrance. Scrub the timeline to preview the movement and adjust the timing of the keyframes by dragging them if it feels too fast or slow.
Select all the keyframes you just created and apply Easy Ease via the right-click menu or its keyboard shortcut. This softens the constant linear motion into a natural acceleration and deceleration, instantly making the animation feel more professional. Preview again; the entrance should now ease in gracefully rather than moving at a robotic constant speed. This is the highest-impact habit for a beginner.
If your title needs to leave the screen, set keyframes later in the timeline to fade and scale it out, then Easy Ease those too. For more refined motion, open the Graph Editor to reshape the speed curves, steepening for snappier moves or flattening for slower ones. The Graph Editor is optional on day one, but it is where you go when Easy Ease alone is not enough.
To bring the graphic into your edit, render it to a codec that supports an alpha channel so the background stays transparent, then drop the file onto a track above your footage in your editor. Alternatively, in an all-Adobe workflow, use Dynamic Link to send the composition straight into Premiere without rendering an intermediate file. Choose alpha render for portability and lower overhead, or Dynamic Link for interactive, still-evolving graphics.
The first mental shift is the most important one. In Premiere or Final Cut, you assemble clips left to right on a timeline to tell a story. After Effects is built for a different task: taking a small number of elements and animating their properties over time to create motion. You are not usually cutting a long sequence; you are building a short, polished animation that you will often bring back into your main editor.
After Effects is layer-based, not track-based in the editing sense. Every element, whether a video clip, an image, a text layer, or a shape, sits as its own layer stacked in a composition. Layers higher in the stack appear in front of those below. This stacking is the foundation of compositing: you combine multiple layers, control how they blend and mask, and animate each one independently.
Because of this difference, the typical workflow is a round trip. You cut your video in Premiere or Resolve, then build a title or graphic in After Effects, then bring that animation back into your edit. Adobe's Dynamic Link even lets Premiere and After Effects talk directly without exporting in between. Understanding that After Effects is a specialist companion to your editor, not a replacement for it, sets the right expectations from the start.
Everything in After Effects happens inside a composition, usually shortened to comp. A composition defines your canvas: its resolution, frame rate, duration, and background. When you create a new comp, you set these to match your project, for example 1920 by 1080 at the frame rate of your edit. The comp has its own timeline at the bottom of the screen, where your layers live and where you scrub through time.
You can have many compositions in one project, and one of the most powerful concepts is nesting: a composition can be placed inside another composition as a single layer. This lets you build a complex animation in one comp, then treat the whole thing as a tidy element inside a master comp. Nesting keeps complicated projects organized and lets you reuse animations without rebuilding them.
Match your comp settings to your final delivery from the outset. Setting the wrong frame rate or resolution and discovering it late means re-timing animations or rescaling elements. The Composition Settings dialog is where you confirm resolution, frame rate, and duration, and it is worth getting right before you start keyframing. A comp that matches your edit drops back into your timeline cleanly with no surprises.
Every layer carries a set of Transform properties that govern how it appears and moves: Anchor Point, Position, Scale, Rotation, and Opacity. These five properties are the workhorses of basic motion graphics, and you can build a remarkable amount with them alone. Twirl open a layer in the timeline to reveal them, and you will see a value next to each that you can change at any point in time.
The Anchor Point deserves special attention because beginners constantly trip over it. The anchor point is the pivot around which a layer scales and rotates. If a logo spins around its corner instead of its center, the anchor point is in the wrong place. Setting the anchor point to the center of your element first makes scaling and rotation behave intuitively, and there are tools and shortcuts to center it quickly.
Position moves a layer across the frame, Scale grows or shrinks it, Rotation turns it, and Opacity fades it in and out. Each of these is a property you can animate. The entire craft of basic motion graphics is choosing which properties to animate, over what span of time, and how they accelerate and decelerate. Master these five Transform properties before reaching for anything more advanced.
A keyframe records the value of a property at a specific moment in time. Animation in After Effects is simply two or more keyframes on the same property at different times, with the software interpolating the values in between. Set Position to one place at the start, set a keyframe, move later in time, change Position, and After Effects automatically generates the smooth movement between the two points.
You create keyframes using the small stopwatch icon next to each property. Clicking the stopwatch turns on keyframing for that property and drops a first keyframe at the current time. Move the playhead to a new point, change the value, and a second keyframe appears automatically. The blue diamonds in the timeline mark your keyframes, and you can drag them to retime your animation or delete them to remove movement.
Linear keyframes, the default, produce constant-speed movement that feels robotic and unnatural. Real motion accelerates and decelerates. This is where easing comes in, covered next, but the foundational skill is fluency with keyframes themselves: setting them, moving them, and reading the timeline to understand what is animating and when. Once keyframes feel natural, you can animate any property in the program the same way.
The difference between an amateur animation and a professional one is usually easing. Linear keyframes move at a constant speed, which the eye reads as mechanical. Easing makes elements accelerate out of a starting point and decelerate into their destination, the way real objects move. The quickest win in all of motion graphics is applying Easy Ease to your keyframes, which instantly softens the start and end of a movement.
Select your keyframes and apply Easy Ease, often via a right-click menu or a keyboard shortcut, and the harsh constant motion becomes a smooth ease in and out. For most titles and simple graphics, this alone elevates the result dramatically. It is the single highest-impact habit a beginner can adopt, and it costs almost nothing in effort.
For finer control, the Graph Editor visualizes how a property's value or speed changes over time as an adjustable curve. Steeper parts of the curve mean faster movement; flatter parts mean slower. By reshaping these curves you can craft precise acceleration, snappy overshoots, and bouncy settles. The Graph Editor has a learning curve of its own, but you do not need it on day one. Start with Easy Ease, get comfortable, and graduate to the Graph Editor when you want more nuanced motion.
Once your graphic is built, you need it in your main edit. There are two common paths. The first is rendering a self-contained video file, typically with an alpha channel so the background stays transparent and the graphic overlays cleanly on your footage. Formats that carry alpha, such as ProRes with an alpha channel or other codecs that support transparency, let you drop the rendered file straight onto a track above your video in Premiere or Resolve.
The second path, for editors working inside Adobe's ecosystem, is Dynamic Link. This connects Premiere and After Effects directly, so a composition appears in your Premiere timeline without rendering an intermediate file. Change something in After Effects and it updates in Premiere. This is convenient for iterative work where the graphic is still evolving, at the cost of more demand on your machine during playback.
Either way, the round trip is the normal rhythm of working with After Effects as an editor: cut in your NLE, build the motion piece in After Effects, then integrate it back. Rendering with alpha is the more portable, lower-overhead approach and works regardless of which editor you use. Dynamic Link is the tighter, more interactive option for all-Adobe workflows. Pick whichever fits your project and hardware.

After Effects benefits from a capable CPU, plenty of RAM, and a good GPU, since compositing and previews are demanding, especially with effects and high resolutions. That said, simple titles and basic motion graphics run fine on modest modern hardware. More RAM helps with longer previews, and an SSD speeds up caching. You can learn the fundamentals comfortably without a high-end machine.
