After Effects is not an editor — it is a compositing and motion engine. Here is how to use it to build visuals that move with the music.

After Effects sits at the center of almost every professional lyric video, music visualizer, and motion-graphic sequence you have ever watched. It is not the tool you use to cut a music video from raw footage — that is Premiere Pro or another NLE — but it is the tool you use to make things move, glow, react to audio, and feel designed rather than assembled. Understanding what After Effects is for, and what it is not for, is the difference between fighting the software and using it fluently. Set up the composition and import your audio

Import your audio file and drag it to the bottom of the composition layer stack. Enable waveform display on the audio layer so you can see amplitude as you work. Save the project before you do anything else.

Drop composition markers on key audio hits

Play through the track and press the asterisk key on the numeric keypad to drop composition markers at every beat, downbeat, lyric entrance, or transition you want to animate to. Do not try to catch every beat in one pass — make multiple passes for different categories of hits. These markers become your timing grid for all subsequent animation. For lyric timing, solo the vocal layer if you have it and mark stressed syllables specifically.

Build your background layers

Create your background treatment on solid or shape layers at the bottom of the layer stack. If using Fractal Noise or CC Particle World, apply the effect now and set the basic parameters — leave animation until after the type is in place. If using footage as a background, drop it in and apply initial color treatment with Curves or Lumetri. Check that the background value range will not fight the type you are about to add.

Add text layers and time them to the audio

Create text layers for each lyric line or section. Use the composition markers as entry points — place each text layer so it enters one to two frames before the vocal hits its corresponding line. Set exit points generously: the viewer should never be hunting for what they just heard. For the full song, work through all entries and exits at this coarse level before animating anything. Locked timing is the scaffold everything else hangs on.

Animate type with text animators and keyframes

Apply a text animator to your primary lyric layers. Set the animated property — Opacity with a slight Y Position offset is a readable starting point — and keyframe the Range Selector Offset to sweep across the layer over a short duration timed to the lyric entrance marker. Ease all Offset keyframes and adjust Smoothness. Take this primary behavior across all standard lyric lines, then go back and add per-word or per-layer secondary animation to the hook and emotionally weighted lines. No linear keyframes anywhere.

Generate audio-reactive elements

Go to Animation and run Convert Audio to Keyframes on your audio layer. Choose an H.264 preset at high bitrate for web delivery — YouTube, Vimeo, or social — or a ProRes 422 HQ preset if delivering to a label, distributor, or broadcast.
