The single most important factor in how in-ears sound is the seal — how well the eartips block your ear canal. A good seal delivers full, clear bass and isolates you from outside noise; a poor seal sounds thin, tinny and leaks stage noise in, tempting you to crank the volume dangerously.
Most universal-fit in-ears come with several sizes of foam and silicone tips. Try them until you find a pair that fits snugly and comfortably and blocks outside sound well. Foam tips usually seal and isolate best. For players who use in-ears regularly, custom-moulded tips made from impressions of your ears give the best possible seal and comfort, but good universal tips get most people a long way first.
A monitor mix is what you hear, and it is different from what the audience hears. The goal is to hear what you need to perform well — usually a clear sense of your own part, the key timing references (often drums and bass), and enough of the rest to stay locked in. You do not need everything loud.
Start by bringing up the most important elements for your role: a singer needs to hear their own voice clearly plus a pitch reference like keys or guitar; a drummer needs a solid kick, bass and a click if used. Add other instruments only as needed. A cluttered, everything-at-once mix is fatiguing and makes it harder to hear yourself, which is the whole point.
If you use a wireless system, the transmitter and receiver must be tuned to the same frequency, and that frequency must not clash with other wireless gear — other in-ear packs, wireless microphones, or local radio and TV signals. A clash causes dropouts, static or interference in your ears mid-performance.
Most modern wireless systems can scan for a clear channel and sync the beltpack automatically; use that feature, and coordinate frequencies with everyone else using wireless on the same stage. Keep the transmitter antenna in clear line of sight where possible. Always carry spare batteries for beltpacks, since a dead pack means silence in the middle of a song.
In-ears can protect your hearing because a good seal blocks loud stage noise, letting you listen at lower, safer levels. But that protection vanishes if you turn the volume up too high to compensate for a poor seal or a bad mix — sealed loud sound directly in your ear canal is just as damaging.
Set the overall level as low as you comfortably can while still performing accurately.
