A pop filter and a mic stand are unglamorous accessories that make a bigger difference to your recordings than their price suggests. The stand holds your microphone steady and at the right height so you are not gripping it or fighting handling noise, and the pop filter catches the bursts of air from plosive consonants that thump the microphone and ruin otherwise good takes. Manage your XLR cable so it does not pull on the mic or transmit vibration. Leave a little slack and, on a boom arm, clip or run the cable along the arm so its weight is supported. A tidy, secure setup means you can focus on performing rather than nudging a drifting microphone or chasing a thump you cannot explain.
