A mixer takes multiple inputs — microphones, instruments, playback devices — lets you control the level and tone of each, and combines them into outputs for speakers, recording or monitors. Every input on a mixer runs through a channel strip, and they are all the same, so learn one and you have learned them all. From top to bottom a typical strip has: an input connector and a gain (or trim) control that sets the incoming signal level; an EQ section to shape the tone; aux sends to route the signal to monitors or effects; a pan control to place it left or right; and a fader that sets the channel's level in the main mix.
Channels usually have inputs for both microphones (XLR) and line or instrument sources (jack). A mute button silences the channel and a solo button lets you listen to just that channel. Understanding that the signal flows down the strip — in at the top, out through the fader at the bottom — makes the whole board logical rather than intimidating.
Setting the gain (or trim) correctly on each channel is the foundation of good sound, and it is where beginners most often go wrong. Gain sets how much the incoming signal is amplified at the input stage, before the fader. Set it too low and you get a weak, noisy signal; set it too high and the channel distorts and clips, which sounds harsh and cannot be fixed later.
Set gain for each channel individually: have the source play or sing at its loudest realistic level, and raise the gain until the channel's signal is strong and healthy with headroom to spare — using the channel's metering or PFL/solo function to check. Do this before touching the faders. Good gain staging means every channel sits at a sensible level, so the faders can do their proper job of balancing the mix.
Once levels are set, use the EQ on each channel to shape tone — cutting problem frequencies more often than boosting. Many mixers offer bass, mid and treble per channel, sometimes with a sweepable mid that lets you target a specific frequency. Small, deliberate adjustments work best; heavy EQ usually signals a problem better fixed at the source or mic position.

A pre-fader aux send (common for monitors) is independent of the main fader, while a post-fader send (common for effects) follows it.
