The controller does not make sound by itself; it controls DJ software running on your computer, and a small soundcard inside it sends the music to your speakers while routing a private feed to your headphones for cueing. Setting one up is mostly about installing the right software, connecting the cable, and routing the audio so the master goes to the room and the cue goes to your ears. Understanding the signal flow makes everything else obvious. Your music files live on the laptop. The DJ software reads and plays them, and the controller is a physical remote control for that software — every jog wheel, fader and button sends instructions over USB. The key control to find is the cue (or headphone) section: a CUE button on each channel sends that deck to your headphones only, and a cue/master mix knob lets you blend what you hear privately. Press CUE on the channel of the track you want to preview, and you should hear it in the headphones while the audience continues to hear the master untouched. This is the heart of DJing — confirm it works before going further.
Load a track onto each deck from your software library and press play on deck one so it plays through the speakers. Cue up a second track on deck two, press its CUE button, and listen in your headphones. Adjust the channel gain and EQ so the levels are balanced, then bring the second track in with its channel fader or the crossfader once it is lined up. Watching the software's waveforms and beat grids makes lining up the beats far easier when you are starting out.
Keep your master level out of the red on the controller's meters, and trust your ears over the visuals as you improve. Many controllers and software also offer sync features that match tempos automatically — useful for learning the flow of a mix, though developing your own beatmatching by ear is worth practising. Once you can preview a track in the headphones and bring it in cleanly over the one already playing, your controller is fully set up and you are mixing.
