How to Restring an Electric Guitar (Beginner's Guide)

Electrics restring much like acoustics, but the bridge style — top-load, string-through or tremolo — changes how you anchor each string.

Restringing an electric guitar is a simple, satisfying skill that keeps your instrument sounding bright and playing well, and it is something every player should be able to do. The process mirrors restringing an acoustic — remove the old strings, anchor the new ones at the bridge, wind them neatly onto the tuning posts, stretch them in, and tune up — but electrics use different bridge designs, which is the main thing to identify before you start. This guide walks through the steps and the common bridge types, with no fabricated specs, since string gauges and brands are a matter of preference. If your electric has a floating tremolo, that adds a few quirks we will flag along the way.

Know Your Bridge Type First

Electric guitars anchor strings at the body end in a few different ways, and identifying yours determines how you feed the new strings. The most common types are top-loading bridges, where the string's ball end clips into the back of the bridge; string-through-body designs, where you feed the string through a hole in the back of the guitar so the ball end anchors against the body; and tremolo (vibrato) bridges that let you bend pitch with a bar.

Look at how the current strings attach at the bridge before removing them — that tells you exactly how the new ones go back. A top-load bridge simply receives the ball end at the bridge plate. A string-through guitar needs each string fed from the rear ferrules up through the body. Tremolo systems vary, and floating tremolos in particular are sensitive to string changes. Knowing your type up front prevents confusion halfway through.

Remove the Old Strings

Slacken each string fully by turning its tuning peg before removing it — never cut a string while it is under tension, as the released end can whip. Once a string is loose, unwind it from the tuning post and free it from the bridge: pull the ball end out of a top-load bridge, or back it out through the body on a string-through design. A string winder makes the unwinding much quicker.

Whether you change one string at a time or all at once is largely preference for a fixed-bridge electric. Removing all strings gives you clear access to clean the fretboard and polish the frets while nothing is in the way. However, if your guitar has a floating tremolo, removing all the strings at once releases the spring tension and lets the bridge tip, which makes setup harder — on those guitars, changing one string at a time keeps the system balanced.

Anchor the New Strings at the Bridge

Match each new string to the one you removed by gauge and pitch. Anchor it at the bridge according to your bridge type: clip the ball end into a top-load bridge, or feed the string through the body from the rear ferrules on a string-through guitar until the ball end seats against the back. On a tremolo bridge, seat the ball end in its saddle block or claw as that system requires. Make sure the ball end is fully seated before you start winding.

Take care to route each string through the correct saddle and any string guides so it follows a clean path from bridge to nut. A string that jumps its saddle or sits in the wrong slot will buzz or intonate poorly. With the string anchored and routed correctly at the body end, you are ready to wind it onto the tuning post at the headstock.

Wind Neatly onto the Tuning Post

Thread the loose end through the hole in its tuning post and pull it through, then leave a little slack before winding — a few centimetres beyond the post is a common guide — so you get two or three neat wraps. Enough wraps give tuning stability and a good break angle over the nut; too few can slip, too many make a messy pile. Hold tension on the string with your free hand as you begin.

Wind so the wraps stack downward on the post, neatly below the hole without crossing over, which improves the angle of the string over the nut and helps tuning stability. Turn the tuning peg to take up the slack while guiding the string into its correct nut slot. On guitars with staggered or locking tuners the details differ slightly, but the goal is always the same: tidy, downward wraps and a clean path to the nut. Repeat for every string.

Stretch, Tune and Trim

New strings stretch and will keep going flat until they settle. Once each string is roughly up to pitch, gently pull it away from the fretboard along its length a few times, then retune, and repeat the stretch-and-retune a few times. This greatly shortens the frustrating period where the guitar will not hold tune, getting you to a stable setup much faster.

Tune to standard pitch — E, A, D, G, B, E from the thickest string to the thinnest — using a tuner and always tuning up to each note for stability. On a floating tremolo, tuning is interactive because each string affects the others through the springs, so work around the strings repeatedly until they settle together. Once everything holds, trim the excess string ends at the tuning posts with wire cutters, leaving a short tail. Expect to retune over the next day as the strings finish settling.
