Verse

The storytelling section of a song that sets up the chorus, with changing lyrics.

The verse is the section of a song that carries the narrative or develops the idea, typically using the same melody each time but with different lyrics on each repetition. Verses are where the story unfolds, the detail lives and tension builds, setting up the emotional pay-off of the chorus that usually follows. Most songs alternate between verse and chorus, and verses are generally a little more restrained and lower in energy than the chorus so that the chorus feels like a lift when it arrives. Understanding the role of the verse is fundamental to song structure and to writing songs that hold a listener's attention from start to finish.

432 Academy is the learning arm of Club432 — a performing-arts collective of working musicians, producers, DJs and engineers. Our guides are written for beginners and reviewed by people who play, record and perform for a living, so the advice is what we'd tell a friend picking up the instrument, not specs copied off a box.
