To transpose is to move a piece of music, or a part of it, up or down by a consistent interval so it sounds in a different key while keeping all the relationships between the notes the same. Musicians transpose for practical reasons: to put a song in a more comfortable range for a singer, to make it easier to play on a particular instrument, or to match it to other parts. In a DAW or on a keyboard, transposing can be as simple as shifting MIDI notes or pressing a transpose button, and a capo achieves the same thing physically on a guitar. Understanding transposition is key to playing flexibly and arranging music for different voices and instruments.
