Scale

An ordered sequence of notes that forms the building blocks of melodies and chords.

A scale is a set of notes arranged in order of pitch, forming the raw material from which melodies and chords in a given key are built. The major scale (the familiar 'do-re-mi') and the minor scales are the foundation of Western music, while the pentatonic (five-note) scales are a beginner favourite because they sound good over many chords and are widely used in rock, blues and pop soloing. Learning scales is not just an exercise — it trains your fingers and ear to know which notes belong together, which is what lets musicians improvise, write melodies and understand why music sounds the way it does.
