Rhythm

The pattern of sounds and silences in time — how music is organised over the beat.

Rhythm is the arrangement of sounds and silences in time — the pattern of long and short notes, accents and rests that gives music its movement and feel. It is built on top of a steady underlying pulse (the beat) but is far richer than it: rhythm is what makes a drum groove funky, a melody bounce, or a riff drive forward. Every element of music has rhythm, from the kick and snare to the way a singer phrases a line. Strong rhythmic awareness — feeling where notes fall relative to the beat — is foundational for every musician, and it is often what separates a part that feels alive from one that feels stiff.

432 Academy is the learning arm of Club432 — a performing-arts collective of working musicians, producers, DJs and engineers. Our guides are written for beginners and reviewed by people who play, record and perform for a living, so the advice is what we'd tell a friend picking up the instrument, not specs copied off a box.
