Pentatonic Scale

A five-note scale that sounds good over many chords, popular with beginners.

The pentatonic scale is a five-note scale (penta meaning five) that is one of the most widely used and beginner-friendly scales in the world. By leaving out the two notes most likely to clash, it sounds pleasing over a wide range of chords, which makes it forgiving and ideal for improvising and soloing. The minor pentatonic in particular is the backbone of blues, rock and pop guitar solos, while the major pentatonic gives a brighter, folk- or country-flavoured sound. Pentatonic scales appear across countless musical traditions worldwide. For a new player, learning one pentatonic shape on the guitar unlocks the ability to start soloing almost immediately.
