Mono, short for monophonic, is sound carried on a single channel, so it plays identically from every speaker with no left–right placement or stereo width. Although stereo dominates modern listening, mono remains important: many real-world systems sum to mono — phone speakers, some club and PA systems, Bluetooth speakers — so engineers regularly check a mix in mono to make sure it still sounds balanced and that no elements vanish due to phase problems. Many individual recordings, like a single vocal or guitar take, are captured in mono and then placed in the stereo field afterward. Far from being obsolete, mono compatibility is a sign of a robust, well-made mix.
