Mixing is the stage of production where all the individual recorded and programmed tracks — vocals, drums, bass, instruments — are balanced, shaped and combined into a single, cohesive piece of music. The mixing engineer sets relative volumes, positions sounds across the stereo field (panning), carves space for each with EQ, controls dynamics with compression, and adds depth with effects like reverb and delay. A good mix makes every element clear and the whole greater than its parts; a poor mix leaves a track muddy, unbalanced or fatiguing. Mixing is distinct from mastering, the final polishing stage that comes after it.
