A metronome is a tool that produces a steady, regular click at a tempo you set, giving you an external reference for time. Practising with a metronome is one of the most valuable habits a musician can build, because it exposes the rushing and dragging that the ear hides when playing alone, and it develops the internal sense of timing that everything else depends on. Originally mechanical, pendulum-driven devices, metronomes are now mostly apps and built-in DAW features.
