A capo is a small clamp that fastens across the neck of a guitar (or similar stringed instrument), pressing down all the strings at a chosen fret and effectively shortening them. This raises the pitch of every open string, letting a player keep using familiar open-chord shapes while sounding in a higher key. Capos are invaluable for matching a song to a singer's vocal range without learning new chord fingerings, and for getting brighter, more ringing voicings.
