Bit depth is the number of bits used to describe the level of each individual audio sample, and it determines the dynamic range and the noise floor of a digital recording — essentially how precisely loudness is captured. Higher bit depth means finer steps between the quietest and loudest sounds and a lower background noise level. CD audio uses 16-bit, while studios commonly record at 24-bit because the extra resolution gives more headroom and a cleaner result, making it more forgiving of imperfect input levels. Bit depth works alongside sample rate, which governs frequency detail, and for recording, 24-bit is the recommended standard for capturing the best-quality source material.
