A bar, also called a measure, is a unit that divides music into small, equal groups of beats, making it easier to read, count and organise. How many beats fit in each bar is set by the time signature — most popular music uses four beats per bar, so musicians count '1, 2, 3, 4' and start again at the next bar. In written notation, bars are separated by vertical bar lines. Bars are the basic building blocks of musical structure: loops, phrases and whole song sections are typically measured in bars (a verse might be sixteen bars), which is why producers and musicians constantly count and think in them.
